Frederick Held is a PostDoc and PhD student in the Quaternary Geology Group led by Prof. Dominik Fleitmann within the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel. Based at Bernoullistrasse 30/32 in Basel, Switzerland, he contributes to the department's research on Earth system processes and environmental change.
His research focuses on paleoclimatology, specifically developing a continuous 700,000-year climate record using speleothem (cave deposit) samples from Sofular cave in northern Turkey. This region serves as a critical transition zone between Atlantic and Eurasian climate systems, making it ideal for studying climate interactions during the Holocene and Pleistocene periods.
- Paleoclimate reconstruction using speleothem records
- Stable isotope analysis (hydrogen, oxygen, carbon) of speleothem calcite
- Investigation of glacial-interglacial transitions (Terminations)
- Analysis of multi-centennial climate variability including Dansgaard-Oeschger events
- Temperature reconstructions across different climate cycles
Held's work addresses fundamental questions about climate change mechanisms on both regional and global scales, with particular emphasis on how precipitation, temperature, and ecosystem fluctuations interact during major climate transitions. His research contributes to the Department of Environmental Sciences' mission of understanding Earth system processes and their implications for sustainable environmental management.
