Klaas-Hinrich Ehlers serves as a Researcher at the Institute for German Studies within the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Rostock, where he holds the position of Research Assistant at the Chair of German Linguistics. Based in the Philologicum building on campus, he contributes to academic activities through teaching support and specialized research in German linguistics.
His research focuses on historical sociolinguistics, historical and contrastive pragmatics (particularly the history of politeness), and dialectology of northern Germany. He investigates the regional linguistic history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the evolution of linguistic disciplines, and German-Czech cultural relations. Currently, he leads the project "Regional Low German: Areas, Diachronic, and Situational Variation," developing digital map resources for Low German documentation and pedagogy.
Ehlers maintains active academic engagement through key roles: member of the Johann Gottfried Herder Research Council, editorial board member for the Yearbook "brücken – German Studies Yearbook Czech Republic - Slovakia," reviewer for "Linguistik online," and co-editor of the series "Regional Language and Regional Culture." He also holds memberships in the Association for Low German Linguistic Research (VndS), International Society for Dialectology of German (IGDD), and Study Group 'History of Linguistics' (SGdS).
