Dr. Kim Kiely is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the School of Psychology, Faculty of Science, University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney. He also holds an honorary senior research fellow position at the Ageing Futures Institute and has a conjoint appointment with Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA).
Dr. Kiely's research adopts a contextualized perspective to human development across the life-course, spanning life-course epidemiology, social psychiatry, and gero-psychology. His primary research interests focus on healthy and productive ageing, examining behavioral and social determinants of mental health across the life-course, the social, functional and cognitive impacts of sensory loss in late life, dementia prevention, and social inequalities in healthy life expectancy.
Dr. Kiely has published extensively in gerontology and aging research, with recent work focusing on the intersection of sensory impairment, cognitive decline, and driving safety in older adults. His research often employs longitudinal cohort studies to examine life-course determinants of healthy aging, with particular attention to socioeconomic factors and their impact on disability-free life expectancy.
Dr. Kiely has received several prestigious awards including an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship, an Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation fellowship, the Australian Psychological Society Prize, and the Australian Association of Gerontology RM Gibson Award.
Dr. Kiely supervises PhD students including James Lian ("Childhood Adversity and Healthy Ageing") and Abigail Hanson ("The impact of age-related changes in trust and social cognition on older drivers' interaction with ADAS"). He has been awarded multiple competitive grants, including an ARC Linkage Project on Ageing drivers, an ARC Discovery Project on Healthy and working life expectancies, and an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship on Estimating and alleviating the impacts of age-related sensory decline.
Dr. Kiely is actively involved in the PATH through Life Project and the Dynamic Analyses to Optimise Ageing (DYNOPTA) project, large-scale longitudinal studies examining aging in the Australian population.
