Scientia Professor Kaarin Jane Anstey is a leading academic at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), serving as Director of the UNSW Ageing Futures Institute and a conjoint Senior Principal Research Scientist at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA). Her expertise spans cognitive ageing, dementia epidemiology, and older driver safety. She holds significant roles, including Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (2017–2024) and Director of the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre (2010–2021).
Her qualifications include a BA (Hons) from the University of Sydney, a PhD from the University of Queensland, and multiple fellowships (FAHMS, FASSA, FRNS, FAPS). Her research focuses on cognitive resilience, dementia prevention, and interventions for older drivers. Notable projects include the 20-year longitudinal PATH Through Life Project and the Resilient Minds (ReMind) study. She has developed tools like CogDrisk for dementia risk assessment and leads trials such as MyCoach and SHAPE.
Anstey advises global organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), and chairs the AIHW Expert Advisory Committee on Neurological Diseases. Her work emphasizes translating research into policy and clinical practice for healthier ageing.
Her research outputs include 603+ journal articles, 18 book chapters, and over 80 conference papers. She leads multidisciplinary teams at the UNSW Ageing Futures Institute and collaborates internationally through initiatives like the Global Council on Brain Health.
