Dr. Kilian Cassis is a Research Fellow at Goethe University Frankfurt's Faculty of Social & Cultural Anthropology, affiliated with the NoJoke research project led by Mirco Göpfert. Prior to her academic career, she spent over two decades as a professional actress before earning her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (2011). Her work bridges artistic practice with anthropological inquiry, focusing on humor, sensory studies, and postcolonial theory.
Her research interests include humor as an epistemic practice, methodologies blending anthropology and art, phenomenological approaches, and cosmopolitanism. Key projects explore vernacular cosmopolitanism in Berlin comedy clubs and sensory methodologies informed by acting techniques. She has published extensively on African cinema, postcolonial identity, and collaborative ethnography.
Publications span monographs like Attention in Performance (2021) and articles in journals such as Social Anthropology and Journal of African Cinemas. Her interdisciplinary approach highlights intersections between art, performance, and cultural analysis.
Cassis collaborates across disciplines, engaging with global urbanization, media anthropology, and ethical dilemmas in fieldwork. The NoJoke project underscores her commitment to rethinking humor's role in contemporary political discourse.
