Dr. Anja Oed is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Anthropology and African Studies, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and Head of the Jahn Library for African Literatures. Her academic work focuses on African literary studies, with a specialization in Yorùbá literature, African comics, and narratives addressing war, migration, and childhood.
- Studied English Literature and Linguistics, Musicology, and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Freiburg
- Studied African Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst
- PhD in African Languages and Literatures from SOAS, University of London
Her research spans African literatures, including creative writing in indigenous languages, video film adaptations of Yorùbá literary works, African graphic novels, and postcolonial narratives such as childhood autobiographies. She also examines how war and displacement are portrayed in African literature.
As managing editor of the departmental book series Mainzer Beiträge zur Afrikaforschung, she contributes to academic publishing in African studies. The Jahn Library, under her leadership, houses over 80 African languages and hosts the Janheinz Jahn Symposium every four years.
