Prof. Dagmar von Hoff is a Full Professor of German Literature and Chair of German Media Studies at the German Department of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg and has held academic positions at Leibniz University Hannover before joining Mainz in 2005. Her research focuses on interdisciplinary cultural analysis, particularly gender studies, violence representation in media, and textual media studies. She actively participates in the GRK Life Sciences – Life Writing program, supervising doctoral research on female authors and body politics.
Education: Studied German Literature, Political Science, Psychology, and Education at the University of Hamburg (First and Second State Examinations with distinction, 1988 Ph.D., Postdoctoral thesis 1994). Academic roles include leadership in transnational research projects, such as collaborations with the Universities of Coimbra and Lisbon, focusing on periodical cultures and media laboratories. She received the Casimirus Magnus Medal (2015) for academic cooperation with Kazimierz Wielki University in Poland.
Research Interests: Explores intersections of literature, film, and digital media through themes like violence, gender, and cultural transformation. Key projects include analyzing violence visualization in media, media ambivalence, and transnational periodical studies. Her work bridges disciplinary boundaries, emphasizing intermediality and societal critique.
Scientific Contributions: Authored/co-edited volumes on violence representation, media theory, and periodical studies. Organizes international workshops on trauma mediatization, philosophical experimentation, and transnational cultural networks. Supervises PhD candidates and mentors interdisciplinary research teams.
