Oliver Scheiding is Professor and Chair of American Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, serving as General Editor of Amerikastudien/American Studies. He holds executive board membership in the American Literature Association and scientific board membership in the European Early American Studies Association.
His research centers on Transnational American Studies with emphases on Periodical Studies, Early American Literature, and Media History. He investigates text technologies, multimodal storytelling, and socio-material frameworks through current DFG-funded projects on lifestyle magazines (SFB 1482 "Humandifferenzierung") and Indigenous newspapers (1890-1940), extending periodical studies into independent publishing and intersectional identity frameworks.
Scheiding directs major research initiatives including the Transnational Periodical Cultures collective and previously co-founded the Research Training Group "Life Science – Life Writing" (GRK 2015). His public scholarship encompasses the "Blätterwelten / Paperworlds" exhibition and multimedia contributions to WDR5, SWR2, and American Literature Association podcasts.
