Kieron James Barclay is an Associate Professor in Sociology and a Docent at the Department of Sociology at Stockholm University. He is affiliated with the Stockholm University Demographic Research Institute (SUDA), an international research group focused on population dynamics. His research interests include social demography, family demography, fertility, mortality, health, and educational inequality. He has held fellowships at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) and previously worked at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and the London School of Economics.
Barclay's work primarily examines how family conditions relate to health and mortality, with a focus on reproductive decisions' long-term impacts. He uses Swedish population registers and international datasets like the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). His research has been published in top journals such as Nature, Demography, and Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and covered by media outlets like The Telegraph and Der Spiegel.
Key research themes include birth spacing, parental age effects, sibling dynamics, and the intergenerational transmission of health and socioeconomic status. He collaborates internationally, analyzing data from Sweden, the U.S., and low/middle-income countries. His findings highlight complex relationships between reproductive choices and long-term outcomes, often using sibling fixed-effects methods to control for confounding factors.
Barclay’s work extends to topics like the health consequences of polygamous households, the role of birth order in education, and the societal impacts of skewed sex ratios. He leads projects on demographic trends and health disparities, contributing to both academic and policy discussions.
