Kiernan Gordon is an Associate Professor and Director of the Sport Leadership & Management program at the University of New England’s College of Business. He previously held faculty positions at Miami University and the University of New Hampshire. His research focuses on the intersection of emotion, human interaction, and physical environments in sport contexts, contributing to areas like fan behavior, sport tourism, venue design, and security protocols. Dr. Gordon is also a former NCAA basketball coach and administrator, with experience across all division levels, and currently chairs the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Research Committee.
Education: Ph.D. in Sociocultural Aspects of Sport and Sport Management from The Ohio State University; M.S. in Sport Studies (Sport Management & Exercise Science) from High Point University; B.A. in Interpersonal Processes of Interaction from UC Santa Cruz (sociology, linguistics, behavioral neuroscience).
Research interests emphasize 'place-centric' studies of sport venues and their socio-spatial impacts, including crime patterns near stadiums, fan engagement rituals, and the symbolic role of sport memorials. His work has been published in top journals like Sport Management Review, Journal of Sport & Tourism, and Symbolic Interaction. He is a Research Affiliate at NCS4 (National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security) and lectures internationally, including at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.
Professional Affiliations: North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS), Society for the Study of Symbolic Interactionism (SSSI), National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He also co-founded the Human Architecture and Planning Institute (HAPI).
Coaching Career Highlights: Developed 15 all-conference athletes, led NCAA tournament teams, and coached in the Ohio Small College All-Star Game (2010). His research-practice synergy bridges academic insights with real-world sport management challenges.
