Khalid Medani is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at McGill University. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on Comparative Government and Politics, with specialization in African Politics, Islam and Politics, Informal Economies, and the Political Economy of Development.
Medani’s recent work includes a current book project on Globalization, Informal Markets and Collective Action: The Development of Islamic and Ethnic Politics in Egypt, Sudan and Somalia. His research has been presented at prominent institutions such as Yale University and Stanford University, addressing topics like informal economies, religious fundamentalism, and US foreign policy in the Middle East.
His publications span analyses of state-building in Iraq, Sudan’s political economy, and the intersection of globalization with Islamic militancy. Medani’s work frequently engages with themes of conflict, economic development, and identity politics in Africa and the Middle East.
He has participated in major academic conferences including the American Political Science Association meetings and the Joint Berkeley-Stanford Conference on African Studies. His research emphasizes critical perspectives on neoliberal policies, humanitarian interventions, and the socio-political impacts of globalization.
