Noah Salomon is the Irfan and Noreen Galaria Research Chair and Associate Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Virginia's Department of Religious Studies, with a courtesy appointment in Anthropology. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago. His research explores the intersection of religious criticism, political aesthetics, and Islamic practice in Sudan and the Middle East. Key works include For Love of the Prophet (2016), analyzing Sudan's Islamic state, and studies on secularism in South Sudan and religion in revolutionary movements. Salomon has been a Mellon New Directions Fellow and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study. He currently serves as a Visiting Research Fellow at Lund University.
His research interests span Islamic political theology, state secularism, and revolutionary dynamics, with recent focus on Sudan's 2019 uprisings and transregional Islamic unity. Awards include the 2017 Albert Hourani Prize and AAR's Excellence Award. Salomon's teaching includes courses on Islamic studies, political theology, and the anthropology of religion.
Notable projects include exploring Islamic modes of managing difference and a book on revolutionary time's impact on religious-political frameworks. His work bridges anthropology, history, and political science, offering critical insights into state-religion dynamics in Africa and the Middle East.
