Dr. Jean-Michel Landry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Critical Theory from UC Berkeley. His research focuses on political anthropology, critical theory, postcolonial studies, religion, gender, migration, and the Middle East. He leads an SSHRC-funded project (2018–2022) examining the transnational migration of Islamic family law in Canadian tribunals, emphasizing its impact on gender relations and inter-religious ties within the Canadian-Lebanese community.
Landry teaches undergraduate courses on Anthropological Theory and the Middle East, and graduate seminars on Political Anthropology. His work bridges ethnographic fieldwork in Lebanon with critical theory, particularly engaging thinkers like Foucault, Benjamin, and Asad. His book manuscript explores contemporary shari'a scholars' reinterpretations of Islamic tradition, while earlier research analyzed gender dynamics in religious family courts.
His publications span topics from Foucault’s analysis of Christianity to the sociolegal dimensions of Islamic practices. He actively advises graduate students interested in religion, secularism, migration, and ethical-political frameworks.
