Professor Khaled Khatab is a Professor of Statistics and Health Economic Modelling at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), part of the School of Health and Social Care within the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences. He joined SHU in 2012 as a Principal Research Fellow, was promoted to Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in 2017, and attained a Personal Chair in 2020. His roles include leading multidisciplinary research teams and managing statistical/health economic components of funded projects. He holds visiting professorships at the University of Washington (Bayesian Statistics) and Ohio University Zanesville.
Education: BSc, MSc, PhD in Statistics from Munich University, with additional certifications as a Chartered Statistician (CStat) and Chartered Scientist (CSci). Prior roles include Assistant Professor at RWTH Aachen University (2008–2012) and statistical consultant at Glasgow University (2007–2008).
Research focuses on Bayesian statistical methods applied to epidemiology, maternal/child health, and global health inequalities. Key areas include spatial analysis of disease burden, health policy guidance, and developing advanced models (e.g., geoadditive latent variable models). Over 17 years, he has secured £6M+ in grants, published hundreds of articles (40 as first author), and led high-impact projects in Africa, Europe, and the UK.
Editorial roles include Editor for the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (Child Health section) and Academic Editor for PLOS ONE. He chairs the Child Health and Epidemiology Group at SHU and has served on the Royal Statistical Society's Scientific Consultation Board since 2010.
Notable grants include NIHR-funded projects on VR prosthetics (£533K) and thermal comfort studies (£85K). His work bridges statistics, health economics, and policy, with collaborations spanning institutions like the University of Washington, WHO, and Wellcome Trust.
