Professor Robert West serves as Professor of Biostatistics at the School of Medicine, University of Leeds, specializing in statistical applications for health research using observational datasets including NHS records and electronic patient data.
His academic credentials include a BSc, MSc, and DPhil.
His research centers on biostatistical methodologies for complex health data, addressing challenges in missing data imputation, causal inference frameworks, and nonlinear modeling. He actively employs machine learning techniques (boosted trees, random forests) and social network analysis within health informatics contexts, with applications spanning frailty studies, ageing research, diabetes epidemiology, cancer outcomes, and genetic data integration.
Professional recognitions include:
- Chartered Statistician (CStat)
- Chartered Mathematician (CMath)
- Chartered Scientist (CSci)
- Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (FIMA)
Professor West supervises doctoral candidates including Evrim Anik in areas of routine care analytics, frailty assessment, and genetic epidemiology. He contributes to national research governance through current service on the NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research prioritisation committee and Health Research Board CDA Grants Committee, with prior appointments to the NIHR Public Health Research Board and Research Council of Norway International Grants Committee.
His work operates within the Health Services Research Division of the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, focusing on translational statistical applications for healthcare improvement.
