Kevin T. Allen is a part-time Assistant Professor at The New School's School of Media Studies, where he teaches courses in media practices such as Media Practices: Audio (Fall 2025) and Media Practices: Dig Vid Prod (Spring 2025). As a filmmaker, sound artist, and radio producer, his work bridges ethnographic and experimental practices, focusing on sensory ethnography and the intersection of landscape, materiality, and culture.
His research explores sensory ethnography, ethnography and the avant-garde, small-gauge filmmaking, documentary practice, sound art, recycled images, and concrete filmmaking. Recent publications include Asynchronicity: Rethinking the Relation Between Ear and Eye in Ethnographic Practice in the field of Experimental Film and Anthropology.
Kevin Allen has received notable recognition, including:
- Stellar Award for Experimental from the Black Maria Film & Video Festival
- NYC Film & Video Grant from the Jerome Foundation
His creative output has been exhibited at prestigious venues such as MoMA, Ethnographic Terminalia, Flaherty NYC, Margaret Mead Film Festival, Berlin Directors Lounge, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival. His sound art has been featured at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Third Coast International Audio Festival, and Deep Wireless Festival of Radio Art.
