Jen Heuson is a Part-time Assistant Professor at The New School's School of Media Studies. She earned her PhD in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University (2015) with distinction. Her work focuses on sensory heritage, place, and travel, blending ethnography with filmmaking and sound studies. She co-directed the Collaborative Studio at UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art (2017) and was a Wenner-Gren Foundation Fejos Fellow (2018).
Her research includes sound ethnographies of New York City and South Dakota’s Black Hills, and she explores themes like Lakota aural sovereignty and stone tape theory. Her short films have screened at festivals like FLEX Fest and the Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival. Currently, she is developing SOUNDING WESTERN, a film on Indigenous aural sovereignty, and writing a science-fiction novel about geological memory in South Dakota.
Heuson advocates for inclusive public education in Princeton, NJ, and teaches courses like Intro to Cinema Studies. Past roles include contributions to Contemporary Music Review, Mediapolis, and Ethnoscripts.
