Kevin Lyness, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at Antioch University New England. He has served as Program Director for both the MA and PhD programs in Marriage & Family Therapy (MFT) and directed the Antioch University Couple and Family Therapy Institute. His work emphasizes social justice, addiction, and systemic approaches to therapy.
- Education: PhD from Purdue University, MS and BS in Family Studies from Texas Tech University (with a minor in Substance Abuse Studies).
Dr. Lyness’s research focuses on social justice in family therapy, addiction dynamics, and family coping mechanisms. His projects explore equity in access to resources, cultural and interpersonal systems of oppression, and therapeutic interventions for substance abuse. He has conducted qualitative studies on social justice definitions within MFT and collaborated on tools like the Mental Illness Distress Scale (MIDS).
His recent publications highlight systemic supervision, same-sex divorce, and intergenerational value transmission. He has presented nationally on accreditation, assessment, and therapeutic models. Dr. Lyness is an AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor, licensed in New Hampshire.
He teaches research methods, ethics, and couple therapy, with past roles at Colorado State University. Personal interests include photography and outdoor activities like mountain biking and kayaking.
