Dr Kerry Heckenberg is an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Communication and Arts, University of Queensland. She has taught both science (physiology) and art history at the university. Her research focuses on colonial art, exploration narratives, and visual representation in Australian history. She holds a PhD from the University of Queensland (2002) titled The art and science of exploration: a study of genre, vision and visual representation in nineteenth century journals and reports of Australian inland exploration.
Her work examines intersections between art, science, and colonialism, with notable contributions to understanding 19th-century Australian pictorial practices, exploration documentation, and Indigenous representation. Key themes include colonial aesthetics, archival retrieval, and the role of visual media in constructing national identity.
Publications span over 25 journal articles, 4 book chapters, and a conference paper, with topics ranging from Queensland Art Gallery histories to the reinterpretation of colonial photographic archives. Her research has been featured in venues like Journal of Art Historiography and Victorian Literature and Culture.
