Sigrid Lien is Professor of Art History and Visual Culture at the University of Bergen’s Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies, where she leads the Visual Culture Research Group. Her research examines colonial photographic archives, Sámi representation, and early women photographers through decolonial and feminist frameworks.
Lien investigates institutional afterlives of 19th-century ethnographical photography, methodological approaches to 'lost' archives, and intersections of nation-building with settler colonialism in Northern Norway. Her recent keynote lectures address decolonial challenges in photography research and digital revolutions in studio practices.
She co-authored studies on Sámi photographic representation as Norwegian outsiders, emphasizing ethical research negotiation. Her collaborative project 'Activating Absences' develops methodologies for recovering marginalized photographers like Solveig Lund.
Lien contributes to the Norwegian Research Council projects and partners with international museums including Victoria and Albert Museum. She serves on committees at the University of Bergen and publishes extensively on visual historiography.
