Anna Isbell is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Art History at the University of Iowa. She holds a PhD and MA in Art History from the University of Iowa, and BAs in Anthropology and Art History from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Her research focuses on Victorian visual culture, particularly intersections of madness, femininity, and physical weakness. She teaches introductory courses in African art and global art, along with advanced modules on photography, modern/contemporary art, and 19th-century topics.
Her current project, an upcoming manuscript titled ‘Of ladies most deject and wretched’: Lovesickness and Femininity in Victorian Visual Culture, explores gendered representations of emotional vulnerability. Isbell has presented research at conferences including the Midwest Victorian Studies Association and the Nineteenth-Century Studies Association. Prior to her role at Iowa, she taught at Norfolk State University and directed the James Wise Gallery.
Her academic interests span 18th- and 19th-century European art, feminist methodologies, and the history of medical imagery. She advises students through the Art History Graduate Program and contributes to departmental initiatives in pedagogical innovation.
