Dr Justine Pizzo is a Lecturer in British Literature (1837–1939) at the University of Southampton. She specializes in Victorian literature, ecology, and climate studies, with affiliations to the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Writing and the Southampton Centre for Nineteenth-Century Research. Her research explores literary atmospheres (fog, rain) and their role in character development in Victorian novels. She is editing a new Norton Critical Edition of Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd.
Teaching focuses on modules like 'The Novel', 'British Literature in the Nineteenth Century', and 'Ecology in Victorian Literature'. She supervises PhD students in 19th-century literature, including Kerry Parker. Current research includes a monograph on The Character of Climate: Women and Atmosphere in Victorian Fiction.
