Dr. Kent Johnson serves as Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Kinesiology at Lipscomb University, where he has held continuous appointments since 1984. His leadership roles include 20 years as Department Chair (1993-2014), co-founding the Exercise and Nutrition Science M.S. Program (2009), and current oversight of undergraduate Exercise Science Program accreditation through CoAES. Johnson also serves as Faculty Athletics Representative since 1997.
His academic credentials include:
- B.A. in English from Harding College
- M.Ed. in English from Harding University
- M.S. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Arizona
- Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Southern Mississippi (1988)
Johnson's research program investigates sleep quality in student athletes, advanced body composition assessment techniques, exercise-cognition relationships, and biomechanical impacts of warm-up protocols. He actively shapes the profession through curriculum standard development and advocacy for exercise science accreditation, bridging academic theory with athletic performance applications.
His distinguished recognition includes:

- SEACSM Service Award (1998)
- TAHPERD Scholar Award (1999)
Johnson secured substantial research funding including three consecutive U.S. Navy-ASEE Summer Faculty Research Grants (1989-2001), a $100,000 Ryder Cup/PGA Foundation grant for 'Golf for Business and Life' (1995), plus eight Lipscomb University research grants. His mentorship extended through co-directing the M.S. program for three years and advising numerous student researchers.
As an active leader in ACSM, SEACSM, and NSCA, Johnson served on the CREP Board as Advisory Director (2016-2022, reappointed through 2022). He also contributes to community wellness initiatives through Antioch Church of Christ where he serves as elder.
