Ken Fields is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at the University of Kentucky, where he leads research on Chlamydia pathogenesis and host-pathogen interactions.
His academic training includes:
- B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Centre College
- Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Kentucky
- Postdoctoral training at the Laboratory of Intracellular Parasites, Rocky Mountain Labs, NIAID
Dr. Fields' research focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which Chlamydia species establish intracellular niches through subversion of host defenses. His laboratory specializes in dissecting the type III secretion system, identifying secreted anti-host proteins, mapping targeted host pathways, and correlating secretion activity with the chlamydial developmental cycle. This work bridges molecular microbiology, immunology, and cellular biology to address fundamental questions in bacterial pathogenesis.
Analysis of his 2013-2018 publications reveals consistent innovation in Chlamydia genetic tools (including FRAEM and floxed-cassette mutagenesis) alongside mechanistic studies of effector proteins and host immune evasion. His work spans microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics with direct implications for understanding sexually transmitted infections and reproductive health impacts.
The Fields Lab employs advanced molecular, genetic, and cellular techniques to investigate Chlamydia pathogenesis, maintaining active research programs in bacterial secretion systems and host immune modulation.
