Kelsey Ellis is an Associate Professor and Director of the Institute for Climate and Community Resilience at the University of Tennessee's Department of Geography. Her research focuses on hazard climatology, particularly tornadoes, heat, and flooding, with an emphasis on their societal impacts and risk perception.
Ellis holds a Ph.D. from Florida State University, and her work bridges climatology, hazards, and social sciences. She collaborates with agencies like the National Weather Service and organizations such as Three3, Inc., on projects addressing climate resilience in vulnerable communities.
Her recent projects include assessing urban heat exposure in Knoxville, analyzing nocturnal tornado risks in Tennessee, and evaluating public responses to dual tornado and flash flood warnings. Ellis has secured funding from TVA, NOAA, and the University of Tennessee, among others, for initiatives like the Heat Equity Workgroup and studies on tornado climatology.
Ellis’s research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating climatological data with social science to improve community preparedness and reduce disaster impacts. She leads efforts to enhance early warning systems and support marginalized populations through equitable climate adaptation strategies.
