Jennifer Spinney is an Assistant Professor at the School of Administrative Studies, York University. Her research focuses on the social dimensions of environmental hazards and disasters, particularly extreme weather events such as tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and heat in Canada and the US. She employs qualitative methods like interviews and observations to study risk communication, protective action decision-making, and social recovery. Current projects include investigations into tornado recovery in Ontario, school tornado safety protocols, and inclusive risk messaging for visually impaired individuals.
- Education: MA & PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology (Western University)
Her interdisciplinary work draws from linguistic and sociocultural anthropology, disaster studies, and policy literature. Collaborations include government agencies like the Meteorological Service of Canada to enhance public alerting systems. She is currently accepting graduate students funded via SSHRC and internal grants for studies on disaster resilience, emergency management, and equity-focused risk assessments.
Research highlights include fieldwork on the Joplin, Missouri tornado and Arctic flood events, as well as developing evidence-based guidelines for community preparedness and mental health support post-disaster.
