Joaquim G. Pinto serves as Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where he heads the Regional Climate and Weather Hazards working group within the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK). His research centers on understanding the physical mechanisms behind destructive extreme weather events and assessing regional climate change impacts through high-resolution modeling.
His work investigates winter storms, hurricanes, heavy precipitation, and temperature extremes using kilometer-scale climate simulations to evaluate localized risks. He examines how climate change affects European wind patterns and renewable energy reliability, demonstrating that potential wind power fluctuations (+/-5% continent-wide) can be mitigated through decentralized pan-European grid strategies. His research integrates fundamental atmospheric physics with practical risk assessment for insurers, municipalities, and industries.
Funded by a 13-year AXA Research Fund professorship established in 2016, Pinto collaborates extensively through KIT's Center for Climate and Environment, the Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (CEDIM), and the Collaborative Research Center "Waves to Weather". His findings translate complex climate data into actionable insights for disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience, particularly regarding insured losses from events like Hurricane Friederike which caused approximately €1 billion in damages.
