Dr Keith Miller is a Senior Lecturer of Medical Microbiology at Sheffield Hallam University. He holds a BSc and PhD in Medical Microbiology from the University of Leeds, followed by post-doctoral research fellowships funded by the Department of Health, Novartis, and the MRC. His teaching roles include former course leadership for MSc programs in Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, and Molecular Microbiology. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and affiliated with the American Society for Microbiology and the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.
Education:
- BSc in Medical Microbiology, University of Leeds
- PhD in Medical Microbiology, University of Leeds
Research Interests: Focuses on antimicrobial chemotherapy, including novel antimicrobial agents from venom, coral, and synthetic scaffolds. Investigates molecular drug-target interactions, mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, and rapid pathogen detection via biosensors. Current projects explore sepsis diagnostics and drug resistance in global contexts.
Publications: Recent work highlights advancements in antimicrobial peptide mechanisms (e.g., Smp24), venom-derived therapies, and pyroptosis pathways. Research spans interdisciplinary approaches to combat drug resistance and improve therapeutic efficacy.
Awards:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
Advising & Grants: Supervised postgraduate research on antimicrobial wound dressings, venom-derived peptides, and pathogen resistance in Ghana. Collaborates with industry on drug discovery and diagnostics.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre and Industry and Innovation Research Institute at Sheffield Hallam University.
