Dr. Elaine Frawley is an Associate Professor of Biology at Rhodes College, where she leads the Frawley Lab focusing on bacterial survival mechanisms during host infection. Her research emphasizes how pathogens like Salmonella Typhimurium adapt to nitrosative stress and metal ion imbalances, particularly manganese and zinc homeostasis. She collaborates with the Peterson and Bea labs on novel antimicrobial compound development.
Education: PhD in Biology and Biomedical Sciences from Washington University (2010), BA in Biology from Washington University (2003).
Research interests include bacterial metal transport systems, nitric oxide defense strategies, and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Current projects investigate manganese's role in stress resistance and screen wasp venom-derived peptides for antimicrobial activity.
Publications highlight work on MntP/YiiP efflux pumps, EMP peptide toxicity, and NsrR regulon stress responses. Her lab actively involves undergraduate researchers in both basic science and applied drug discovery projects.
Grants and funding support collaborative drug discovery efforts targeting efflux pump mechanisms. She maintains interdisciplinary connections through Rhodes College's Biochemistry and Environmental Studies programs.
