Professor Keith Lloyd serves as Head of Swansea University's School of Medicine and is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry specializing in community psychiatry within the Department of Psychiatry. He completed his medical training before specializing in psychiatry and maintains an active clinical practice as a community psychiatrist in Swansea. Lloyd places equal emphasis on mental health as physical health in his professional approach and is deeply committed to supporting innovation in health and social care services.
His research interests focus on public mental health, suicide prevention, self-harm, psychiatric epidemiology, and health informatics. He utilizes routinely collected health data to study mental health patterns and interventions across Wales. A key aspect of his work involves examining mental health disparities, patient perspectives, and the management of mental disorders in primary and community care settings.
Lloyd's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on suicide prevention, mental health data linkage, and population health approaches to understanding mental illness. His work frequently involves large-scale analyses of Welsh health records to identify patterns and opportunities for intervention in mental health care. The research shows consistent emphasis on applying epidemiological methods to real-world mental health challenges.
He serves as Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Wales and the Welsh Psychiatrists Association, and is a member of HAFAL's professional reference panel. Lloyd also chairs the Board of Volcano Theater Company and serves as a trustee of Heartbeat Trust UK. Previously, he led NISCHR (now Health and Care Research Wales), the Welsh Government body responsible for health and social care research policy.
Lloyd is principal investigator at the National Center for Mental Health and leads the Accelerate programme, an innovative collaboration between Welsh universities and the Welsh Life Science Hub aimed at rapidly translating innovative ideas into health sector technologies and services. His commitment to mental health advocacy and research innovation has positioned him as a key figure in Welsh mental health policy and practice development.
