Louis Appleby is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manchester, leading the Centre for Mental Health and Risk. He concurrently serves as National Clinical Director for Health and Justice since 2010, Director of the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness, Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Manchester Mental Health Partnership, and Board Member of the Care Quality Commission since July 2013.
His research spans over 20 years of pioneering work in suicide prevention, having authored England's first national suicide prevention strategy in 2002. As chair of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group, he drives the implementation of 'Preventing Suicide in England' (2012), integrating mental health services, public health initiatives, and justice system interventions through evidence-based policy development.
Appleby directs the Centre for Mental Health and Risk which conducts critical research on suicide reduction strategies, while his leadership of the National Confidential Inquiry involves systematic analysis of suicides and homicides by individuals with mental illness to improve clinical practices and prevent future tragedies.
