Professor Kay Peggs is a Professor of Criminology and Sociology at Kingston University, where she joined in 2016. She is affiliated with the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences and the Department of Criminology, Politics and Sociology. Previously, she held academic positions at the University of Winchester as Professor of Sociology and Animal Studies, the University of Portsmouth as Reader in Sociology, and the University of Warwick as Research Fellow in Sociology.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Sociology from the University of Surrey (1991-1995) with a thesis on 'Women and Pensions,' an MSc in Social Research Methods from the University of Surrey (1990-1991), a P.G.C.E.A in Higher Education from the University of Surrey (1996-1997), and a BSc (Hons) in Sociology from Portsmouth Polytechnic (1983-1986).
Professor Peggs' research centers on discrimination, power, and inequalities. Her early work focused on gender, class, and ageing, particularly examining women's experiences with pensions. Her current research addresses the human-nonhuman animal divide, exploring how animals are central to the study of society. She has published extensively on critical animal studies, veganism, and the ethics of animal use in biomedical experiments. Her work combines sociological theory with critical discourse analysis to challenge assumptions about human-animal relationships.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of sociology, criminology, and animal studies. She has made significant contributions to understanding veganism as a lifestyle choice, the ethics of animal experimentation, and the role of nonhuman animals in sociological theory. Her work often employs critical discourse analysis to examine power relations and ethical considerations in human-animal interactions.
Professor Peggs has co-edited two major four-volume sets: 'Observation Methods' (SAGE 2013) and 'Critical Social Research Ethics' (SAGE 2018), demonstrating her expertise in research methodology. Her forthcoming publications include 'Experiments, Animal Bodies and Human Values' (Routledge) and the co-authored '(Not) Consuming Animals: Ethics, Environment and Lifestyle Choices' (Routledge), based on her research project on veganism and consumption.
