Kate Stewart is an Associate Professor in Sociology and Deputy Head of the School of Social Work at the University of East Anglia. She has over 25 years of experience in teaching and research, specializing in medical sociology, food studies, veganism, and human-animal relations. Her work critically examines cultural representations of nonhuman animals in media, particularly focusing on gender and species intersections. Stewart co-authored the groundbreaking 2014 book *Our Children and Other Animals* and leads a research project analyzing the Donald Watson archive, foundational to UK veganism.
Her teaching includes pioneering the UK's first undergraduate module on Vegan Sociology. Prior roles include Principal Lecturer in Sociology at Nottingham Trent University and academic positions at Cardiff University, the University of Bristol, and the University of Nottingham. Research interests span research methodologies, children's food perceptions, and the ethics of anthroparchy in media.
Stewart’s publications critically address veganism’s portrayal in film/TV, children’s media socialization, and digital interactions around food culture. She has contributed to healthcare studies, including primary care consultation frameworks and dental patient dynamics. Her work intersects with UN SDGs related to sustainability and social justice through food systems and animal ethics research.
Advising and collaborations include guiding PhD students and interdisciplinary teams studying archival materials and media impacts. She advocates for trans-species social justice through critical analyses of cultural narratives and policy advocacy in animal ethics.
