Kaushik Basu is the Carl Marks Professor of International Studies and Professor of Economics at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. He serves as President of the International Economic Association and has held prominent roles including Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the World Bank (2012–2016) and Chief Economic Advisor to the Indian government (2009–2012). Basu co-founded the Cornell Research Academy of Development, Law, and Economics (CRADLE) and focuses on development economics, industrial organization, game theory, and welfare economics.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the London School of Economics (1976); BA Econ (Hons) from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
- Leadership: Founder of the Centre for Development Economics (Delhi School of Economics) and Madras School of Economics.
His research spans economic development, law and economics, political economy, and game theory. Recent work includes topics on pandemic preparedness, profit-cap policy, institutional reform, and the interplay between social norms and legal frameworks. Awards include India’s Padma Bhushan (2008), the Humboldt Research Award, and fellowships from the Econometric Society. Basu advises policymakers globally and leads interdisciplinary initiatives at Cornell.
