Basu's research focuses on labor markets in developing countries, behavioral economics, and field experiments. His specific interests include the informal sector, minimum wage enforcement, labor contracts, employment guarantee schemes, child labor, human trafficking, and climate-driven migration. He has conducted extensive research in India on topics such as indoor air pollution, health reporting errors among older adults, and the effects of alcohol policy on intimate partner violence.
