Dr. Katy Sowery is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Liverpool's School of Law and Social Justice, part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD in EU constitutional law (2018) and has conducted research collaborations with Leiden and Oslo universities. Her work focuses on animal law, EU legal frameworks, and critical jurisprudence, particularly animals' legal status during global crises (climate change, war, pandemics). She has published in journals like the European Law Review and delivered lectures on non-human legalities at St. Jerome's University (Canada). She coordinates the Animal Law and Jurisprudence modules, introduced the Animal Law course in 2023/2024, and leads the Law School's Widening Access team, overseeing scholarships like the Stephen Lawrence Scholarship.
Her research explores intersections between animal law, environmental law, and constitutional theory, emphasizing ethical and philosophical dimensions. Recent publications analyze the EU’s Nature Restoration Law and animal welfare in agricultural trade. She actively engages with policy, submitting evidence to the UK Home Affairs Committee on EU-UK relations in 2019.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating Animal Law (LAW348), Jurisprudence (LAW332), and contributing to Law of the European Union II (LAW314). Administrative roles involve managing recruitment strategies and student support initiatives.
