Professor Padraig McAuliffe holds a BCL and PhD and is affiliated with the University of Liverpool's School of Law and Social Justice within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on how international legal frameworks—such as socio-economic rights, transitional justice, and international criminal law—intersect with the political realities of developing states. He critiques the disconnect between liberal international law assumptions and pragmatic governance challenges like neopatrimonialism and short-term planning horizons.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating Criminal Law modules at undergraduate levels (LAW107, LAW207, LAW307) and contributing to Jurisprudence (LAW332). His research groups include the International Law and Human Rights Unit and Critical Approaches to International Criminal Law. He supervises postgraduate research in transitional justice, rule of law, socio-economic rights, and neopatrimonialism.
Publications span legal history, cultural heritage protection in conflict zones, and the evolving concept of progressive realisation in human rights law. His work bridges theoretical critiques with empirical analyses of law's application in resource-constrained environments.
