Dr. Katrina Champion is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney, affiliated with The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use and the Sydney School of Public Health. She leads the Healthy Lifestyles Research Program at the Matilda Centre and holds a Sydney Horizon Fellowship. Her work focuses on preventing substance use, mental health issues, and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors in adolescents through digital interventions. She has developed programs like the Climate Schools and Health4Life, which aim to reduce chronic disease risks and improve mental health via eHealth approaches.
Her research spans multiple health behavior change, neuroscience literacy in substance use prevention, and culturally inclusive programs for Indigenous youth. She has held a prestigious NHMRC Early Career Fellowship at Northwestern University (USA) and collaborates internationally. Dr. Champion’s projects are funded by major grants from MRFF, NHMRC, and the Paul Ramsay Foundation, addressing vaping prevention, socioeconomic disparities, and Indigenous health.
Key achievements include the OurFutures program, which has been adapted globally, and her role in policy initiatives like the Cracks in the Ice toolkit. She has received numerous awards for her contributions to prevention science, including the Matilda Centre Research Excellence Award (2021) and multiple best paper awards.
Her current projects include the Health4Life cluster trial, the OurFutures Vaping program, and trauma-informed mental health prevention initiatives. She also advises on policy implementation and stakeholder engagement for digital health programs.
