Associate Professor Kathy Townsend holds a PhD in Marine Science and BSc degrees in Marine Biology from Queensland institutions. She is an Associate Professor in Animal Ecology and Lead for International Engagement at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s School of Science, Technology and Engineering. Her research focuses on marine conservation, human impacts on marine ecosystems, and elasmobranch biology, with notable programs like 'Project Manta' and 'Turtles in Trouble.'
Her work integrates multidisciplinary approaches to address global issues such as marine debris and pollution. She has advised governments and contributed to policy development, including collaborations with international organizations. Kathy is a mentor to students and has been recognized for teaching excellence. Her research has been featured in BBC and National Geographic documentaries.
Professional memberships include the International Sea Turtle Society (since 2009) and American Elasmobranch Society (since 2008). Awards include the Eureka Award for Science Journalism and the Peter Doherty Award. She leads grants on manta ray conservation and marine debris impacts, involving partners like Earthwatch and Austral Fisheries.
