Simon Oliver is an Associate Professor and Programme Leader in the Faculty of Science, Business and Enterprise at the University of Chester, leading the IEMA-accredited MSc Marine and Coastal Resource Management programme. He holds a PhD from Bangor University (2011), an MSc from Bangor University (2005), and a BA from McGill University (1991). His research focuses on animal behavior in ecological contexts, particularly the behavioral ecology of oceanic sharks, including their cleaning, hunting, and migration strategies, and applying this knowledge to conservation challenges. Oliver founded the Thresher Shark Research and Conservation Project (TSRCP) in 2008, which operates in the Philippines to promote shark conservation and education. His work has been featured in Nature, Science, and Scientific American, alongside media outlets like the BBC and National Geographic.
Teaching responsibilities include leading undergraduate modules in Marine Biology, Zoology, and Animal Behaviour, as well as postgraduate courses in environmental and conservation specialisms. His recent research addresses elasmobranch distribution in Mozambique, manta ray population dynamics in the Philippines, and the ecological roles of seamounts. Oliver’s work emphasizes integrating conservation with local community impact and fostering international collaborations.
