معرفی
Kathy Niakan is the Mary Marshall and Arthur Walton Professor of the Physiology of Reproduction at the University of Cambridge, Director of the Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research, and Co-Chair of the Cambridge Reproduction Strategic Research Initiative. She holds affiliate positions at the Babraham Institute and Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Her educational background includes a B.Sc. in Cell and Molecular Biology and a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Washington, a Ph.D. from UCLA, and postdoctoral training at Harvard University.
Research Focus
Niakan's laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms governing early human development, particularly cell fate decisions in embryos and stem cells. Key areas include: establishment/maintenance of pluripotent epiblast cells, signaling pathways (Hippo, NODAL), transcription factor networks, and comparative embryology across mammals. Her work integrates CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, single-cell genomics, and stem cell modeling to address infertility, developmental disorders, and regenerative medicine applications.
Publication Trends
Recent articles demonstrate a strong focus on: 1) CRISPR-based functional genomics in human embryos, 2) Evolutionary conservation of lineage specification mechanisms, 3) Development of stem cell models for extra-embryonic tissues, and 4) Ethical frameworks for human embryology research. Computational approaches (multi-omics, bioimage analysis) are increasingly prominent alongside wet-lab techniques.
Awards and Recognition
- EMBO Membership (2024)
- Genetics Society Mary Lyon Medal (2024)
- Blavatnik Award UK Finalist in Life Sciences (2019)
Academic Leadership
Niakan currently advises PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. She has pioneered ethical guidelines for human embryo research through participation in ISSCR, Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and UK policy committees. Her lab hosts international training programs in placental biology and maintains active public engagement via science festivals, museums, and media outreach.
Laboratory and Collaborations
The Niakan Lab employs interdisciplinary approaches combining developmental biology, genomics, and bioengineering. Current projects include developing in vitro models of human yolk sac development and investigating trophoblast differentiation. The team collaborates globally with clinical IVF centers and maintains strong ties with the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute and Centre for Trophoblast Research.
