Kathryn Leonard is a Lecturer in Primary Initial Teacher Training (ITT) at the University of Sunderland's School of Education. She joined the university in 2015 and currently serves as the subject leader for primary science and music. With over 30 years of experience in primary education—including 10 years as a head teacher—her expertise spans science, design and technology, music, and professional studies education. She supports first-year undergraduate students on the BA (Hons) ITT course and teaches across BA, PGCE, and PGCE School Direct programs. Her role emphasizes guiding trainees during school experiences and integrating practical teaching skills with theoretical knowledge.
Leonard holds a BA (Hons) in Psychology and Music from Keele University (1991) and a PGCE from the University of East Anglia (1992). Her career has focused on primary school leadership and teacher training, particularly in science and music education. She prioritizes student development in evidence-based pedagogy and curriculum design, contributing to the university's mission to prepare effective educators for primary classrooms.
