معرفی
Kathryn Else is a Professor of Immunology at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine within the Faculty of Life Sciences. She holds a BSc and PhD from the University of Nottingham, with postdoctoral training at Manchester through MRC and Wellcome Trust fellowships. Her career includes roles as a Senior Lecturer (2007) and Professor (2009).
Education:
- BSc Zoology, First Class Honors (University of Nottingham, 1985)
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (1986)
- PhD in Parasite Immunology (University of Nottingham, 1989)
Research Interests:
Her work focuses on cellular immune responses to gastrointestinal nematodes, particularly Trichuris infections. She investigates protective immunity mechanisms, resolution of inflammation, and vaccine/drug development. Her lab uses wild mice on the Isle of May to study real-world immune dynamics, emphasizing ecoimmunology and global health impacts of neglected tropical diseases.
Key Achievements:
- Over 125 publications
- Funded by Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, and MRC
- Lead of a large research group
- Supervised >20 PhD students
- Recipient of the Make a Difference Award (2015) and Manchester’s International Women’s Day Prize (2013)
Grants and Projects:
She leads the Centre for Biological Timing, exploring circadian rhythms and immunology. Her grants focus on parasite biology, immune mechanisms, and translational research.
Labs and Teams:
Her lab collaborates internationally on ecoimmunology and neglected tropical diseases, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals (e.g., poverty reduction, health equity).
