Joanne Pennock, MSc, PhD is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester’s Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine. Her research focuses on gut and skin inflammation, particularly using models of colitis and atopic dermatitis to study host-pathogen interactions. She is Program Director for the MSc Clinical Immunology (2011–2023) and Academic Lead for the UK-wide NHS Clinical Scientist Trainee Program (2007–2018). Key collaborations include work with Dr. Peter Arkwright at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Professors Hiro Matsuda and Akane Tanaka at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.
Her research interests span mucosal immunology, parasitic infections, and skin microbiology. Notable contributions include studies on chronic nematode infection’s Crohn’s-like pathology and the role of the enteric nervous system in colonic inflammation. She has published 21 articles, including work on arginase’s role in skin immunity and graphene oxide biodegradation mechanisms.
