Professor Kathryn Arnold is a Professor of Ecology in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York. She has led interdisciplinary research at the intersection of science, policy, and regulation for over 20 years. Her current roles include Co-lead of the Food, Water and Waste Theme at the York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI) and former Dean of the York Graduate Research School (2020-2024). She holds a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and has pioneered projects like the Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education (YCEDE), a £4M initiative addressing racial equity in postgraduate research.
Education: BSc Biological Sciences (University of East Anglia/University of Bonn, Germany) and PhD Zoology (University of Queensland, Australia). Professional roles include heading Defra’s EU Exit Strategy team (Resources and Waste division) and academic positions across Australia and the UK.
Research focuses on environmental change impacts, including chemical contaminants and habitat management on biodiversity. Key areas include antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in wildlife, ecotoxicology, and avian behavioral ecology. Fieldwork spans Cambodia, the Maldives, Arctic regions, and UK habitats like the Humberhead Peatlands.
Scientific contributions include over 80 publications and leadership in collaborative networks. Awards include the Royal Society Fellowship. Active in policy, she co-authored a Lancet Planetary Health paper on One Health approaches to AMR. Supervises PhD students in biodiversity conservation, environmental ecotoxicology, and ecosystem services.
Grants and collaborations include NERC-funded racism studies in environmental sciences and EPSRC projects on AMR drivers. Leads national and international initiatives to enhance equity in doctoral education and wildlife conservation.
