Lindsay Carman Stringer is Professor and Chair in Environment and Development at the University of York, and Director of the York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI). She holds dual affiliations with the Department of Environment and Geography and the Department of Biology, driving interdisciplinary environmental research at the intersection of ecological systems and human development.
Her research spans environmental science, sustainable development, climate change adaptation, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, land management, and food systems. She investigates how environmental challenges interact with development processes in the Global South, developing methodological frameworks for practical solutions. Current work addresses wood fuel systems in Nigeria, renewable energy infrastructure impacts, and food waste valorization in Malaysia.
Recent 2025 publications reveal consistent interdisciplinary trends: integrating social and ecological sciences to address sustainability challenges through context-specific methodological frameworks. Her work bridges energy policy, biodiversity conservation, and circular economy approaches across diverse global settings including Nigeria, Malaysia, and coastal urban environments.
Professor Stringer leads significant funded projects including the EU Commission's TERRASAFE initiative (2024-2029) on terrestrial resilience in arid ecosystems, seaweed bio-fertilizers for climate adaptation (2024-2026), and flood impacts on maternal health (2024-2027). These projects involve multinational collaborations with policymakers and practitioners to translate research into actionable sustainability strategies.
As Director of YESI, she oversees an interdisciplinary institute connecting over 200 University of York researchers. YESI facilitates cross-departmental collaboration between natural and social scientists, focusing on integrated solutions for global environmental challenges through partnerships with international organizations and local communities.
