Robert Marchant is a Professor in the Department of Environment and Geography at the University of York and serves as a YESI Research Theme Lead for the York Environmental Sustainability Institute. His career spans roles such as Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Senior Research Fellow at York, reflecting expertise in tropical ecology, climate change, and conservation.
Research interests focus on climate change impacts in tropical regions, ecosystem dynamics, and sustainable development. Recent work explores land use change, peatland restoration, urban greenspace equity in Madagascar, and transdisciplinary approaches to African mountain resilience.
His publications address tropical forest conservation, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and socio-environmental systems. Key collaborators include institutions in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Mozambique, with datasets spanning Madagascar, Nigeria, and the Amazon.
Scientific awards include recognition for climate resilience projects in Mozambique (2019) and rapid response research on Cyclone Idai and the African informal settlements during the pandemic (2020). Current projects include Mountain Social-Ecological Futures and Lion Futures, focusing on interdisciplinary sustainability research.
