Lesley Smith is a Lecturer in Animal and Veterinary Sciences at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), affiliated with the Disease Systems team within the Food Security Challenge Centre. She holds a PhD from the University of York (2007), a Master's in Applied Animal Behaviour from the University of Edinburgh (2002), and a Bachelor's in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen (2000). She previously worked at the University of Stirling (2007–2009).
Her research focuses on AMR in livestock, disease-behavior interactions in animals, and wildlife-livestock interfaces. Key projects include DEFRA’s AMR surveillance initiative (2024–present) and SRUC’s multi-year programs on AMR transmission (2022–2027) and parasitism behavioral signatures (2017–2021).
Teaching responsibilities include module leadership for 'Diversity of Life', 'Host-Pathogen Interactions', and 'Wildlife-Agriculture Interactions' in the BSc Applied Animal Science/Animal Welfare Science program. She advises PhD students Arianne Lowe (UoE Royal School of Veterinary Studies) and Alex Morris (UoE Biological Sciences), as well as MSc and BSc students in parasitology and animal behavior.
