Kathleen Chapman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts. She holds PhDs in German Literature and Art History from the University of Southern California and a BA in Germanic Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Her research examines Western European modernist art and visual culture, particularly German works before 1945. She explores diverse subjects including wildlife art, commercial poster design, German Impressionism/Expressionism, and queer literature/visual culture. Her current book project analyzes animal representations in German art during industrialization and colonial expansion periods.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses in 20th-century art (German Expressionism, European modernism, women artists) and graduate seminars on Art/Animals/Ecologies, Fantasies of the Modern, and Machine Age design.
