Alejandra Uslenghi serves as Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University, with core faculty status in the Critical Theory program and affiliations in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Global Avant-Garde and Modernisms Studies cluster.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, New York University
- M.A., New School for Social Research
Her research centers on modern literature and visual culture, critical theory and comparative modernist studies, and the history of photography and modern art in Latin America. She examines intersections between literary avant-gardes and visual practices, with special focus on émigré German and Eastern-European women photographers in Latin America. Her work bridges comparative literature, art history, and critical theory through interdisciplinary analysis of modernist visual culture.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent thematic focus on Latin American modernism and photography. The 2023 essays analyze visual technologies in 19th-century literature and cosmopolitan dimensions of modern photography through Gisèle Freund's work, while the 2021 monograph explores Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola's photographic methods. Earlier works examine universal exhibitions (2016) and Walter Benjamin's image theory (2011), revealing an enduring commitment to visual culture studies within Latin American contexts.
